Nominum DCS Version 4.2 helps providers meet IPv6 requirements and has new features to support more robust deployments for DDNS.
Redwood City, Calif. – June 26, 2012 — Nominum today announced the release of DCS 4.2 to help telecom providers meet IPv6 requirements. It also adds features to support more robust deployments for DDNS, which is becoming increasingly critical as more services are IP enabled. Telecom providers designing projects for their broadband customers around IPv6 commonly work in accordance with Broadband Forum’s TR-177 reference architecture. DCS 4.2 meets these requirements and more.
The Broadband Forum TR-177 is the IPv6 extension to TR-101, which describes an Ethernet based aggregation network for DSL service. Telecom providers who are building IPv6 access networks very likely base their access network architecture on the TR-177 reference. TR-177 introduces the following DHCP requirements:
- Support for RFC 6221, Lightweight DHCP Relay Agent option – this enables the “access node” (DSLAM or BNG) to function as a layer 2 relay agent and insert relay agent information that will be honored by the DHCP server.
- Prevent clients connecting through different access loops from receiving leases from the same 64-bit subnet; and assign leases to all clients connecting through a specific access loop from the same prefix.
DCS 4.2 addresses these requirements by introducing allocation grouping, with a user-configurable length of address prefix that will be dedicated for each access loop (for example residential customer). DCS 4.2 also introduces lease limiting for IPv6, with separate limits for IPv6 addresses and prefixes delegations. This is critically important as it allows the ISP to protect the service from address starvation due to broken or rogue devices requesting an abundance of prefix delegation leases. DCS 4.2 also introduces a facility for configuration of fixed prefix delegations per access loop or customer, enabling the ISP to offer a premium service to its customers. Additionally, DCS 4.2 extends its logging subsystem to include a keyword for vendor-class information.
DCS 4.2 also introduces DDNS multi-mastering, enabling the ISP to configure DDNS zones that have two or more primary master servers. This is highly critical for services such as VoIP, IPTV, VOD and others that often require a robust DNS naming for the set top box, MTA or other device. Together with the Nominum ANS authoritative name server, which also supports multi-mastering, DCS 4.2 now allows the ISP to manage truly robust DDNS services that eliminate all single points of failure.
