History

Nominum was founded in 1999 to develop BIND 9 and ISC DHCP3 for the Internet Software Consortium (ISC). While working on these projects, we were struck by the lack of commercial-grade DNS and DHCP solutions—especially ones that would meet the needs of major service providers and corporations who build their businesses on their networks.

Leveraging the expertise of Dr. Paul Mockapetris, the inventor of DNS and our Chairman and Chief Scientist, and Ted Lemon, author of the first widely used DHCP implementation, Nominum released CNS and DCS—the first ever commercial-grade DNS and DHCP products—in 2002. As a result of our technical expertise and commitment to quality, these products became recognized as the platinum standard for world-class network owners.

Nominum’s high-performance DNS servers were a key part in making the explosive growth of the Internet possible. While networks based on legacy solutions suffered outages, our servers enabled network owners to handle the exponential growth of DNS traffic without service disruptions.

In 2006 we made a fundamental change in how DNS servers are architected, with the release of our Vantio platform. Vantio is an Intelligent DNS system that combines the most advanced caching DNS solution on the market with real-time event awareness to optimize the way the Internet is queried for information. We added to that multiple layers of security that not only protect the Vantio server from attack, but also protect the transmission path and ensure the integrity of domain information. We also added an extensible layer of policy software modules that allowed network owners to layer additional user-facing services to their networks through their DNS infrastructure.

Nominum’s commitment to security was especially evident in 2008, when prominent security researcher Dan Kaminsky discovered a major DNS vulnerability that threatened to shut down the Internet. While Nominum customers were shielded from the dangers of this vulnerability and experienced no downtime, owners of other solutions faced months of exposure to the vulnerability—as well as patching and unplanned maintenance.

In 2009 Nominum launched its SKYE Hosted Network Services business to further extend the reach of our solutions to all network owners and enhance the ability of our customers to improve their network infrastructure and offer new services. Today we continue to innovate new services that make the Internet even more useful and safe for all users.

Throughout our history, we’ve worked to enhance the Internet experience for all users of the Internet. If you use the Internet (and who doesn’t), chances are high that your DNS requests have been handled by Nominum software at one time or another. Today our software is an integral part of the Internet—directly improving and securing the Internet experience for over 500 million users worldwide.
