Virtual Network Extension

Introduction

In today’s fast-growing and ever-changing landscape, time is always of the essence. And Network owners are always in a race to keep up with the growing demand for new services and applications on their network-like reducing the time it takes a single DNS query to traverse the Internet, an entire Web page to load, or new service capabilities or expanded network coverage to be deployed. Network owners realize that to win the race, they must offer the fastest service and most reliable support for these new services. They also understand that network diversity and service proximity often translate into improved resilience, availability and performance for their network.

The Need

With the continued growth in broadband services, network owners face the challenge of expanding their network and service capacity to meet the needs of their end users. With more connected devices than ever, users are staying connected longer, and any new application can become an overnight sensation, spiking DNS resolution request traffic instantly. Having a service that can be tapped into at a moment’s notice alleviates the time lag inherent in capital expenditures for new data centers, hardware and the resources to deploy them. It also allows them to adopt a proportional investment model that reduces operating costs and eliminates over-investing. Some network owners, particularly in the Enterprise market, need to be able to leverage a global DNS infrastructure to address rapid growth of new offices, handle network changeovers and other events.

Our Solution

Nominum’s SKYE Resolution and SKYE Authority can be turned on instantly, allowing network owners to use these hosted network services as standalone extensions of their existing DNS deployments. These hosted network services can also be used to handle a fixed or dynamic portion of the traffic processed by the network. Network owners can leverage SKYE Authority to act as a secondary set of name servers for their company’s domains (or their customers’, if they run a hosting business). This provides instant “slaving” and replication of all domains configured on an in-network ANSP deployment, ensuring their availability across a diverse set of name servers worldwide. This solution is ideal for anyone wanting to maintain a hidden DNS master within their network—or for large hosters who wish to provision domains to a secondary service.
