Nominum Protects Against Critical DNS Pharming Vulnerability

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – April 13, 2005 — Nominum, the leading provider of carrier-grade IP name and address management software, today announced that its Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server provides the highest level of protection available against the latest Pharming and DNS cache poisoning attacks. These attacks exploited a critical vulnerability in open source BIND 4 and BIND 8, as identified in an announcement from the Internet Software Consortium (ISC).

According to the ISC, if any nameserver is configured to use “forwarders”, then none of the target forwarders can be running BIND 4 or BIND 8 software. These nameservers must be upgraded in order to avoid attacks.

“The latest string of attacks has once again illuminated the vital importance that the DNS plays in the operation and reliability of the Internet,” said Chris Risley, CEO of Nominum. “The attacks shine a spotlight on network elements that need evaluation and improvement. Network operators can protect their networks from many common threats by upgrading to commercial grade DNS software.”

Nominum’s commercial grade products are more secure and less prone to succumbing to an attack than open source alternatives, while providing the scalability and robustness to meet the increasing demands placed on the always-on network. ISPs, Telcos and enterprises from around the world have recognized the increased quality of service, security, scalability and reliability brought about by Nominum’s products. Companies that have replaced open source DNS with Nominum products include British Telecom, Samsung Networks, COLT, NTL, TelMex, NetIQ, and many others.

“The DNS landscape is evolving rapidly,” said Dan Golding, senior analyst at the Burton Group. “DNS security concerns, the rapid emergence of VoIP, and efforts to stop SPAM have all increased both the utilization and reliance on DNS servers. Enterprises and service providers must cast a wide net in evaluating new DNS architectures. Relying on “no-cost” legacy solutions is a penny-wise and pound-foolish exercise. The time to find out that there are other solutions is before an enterprise disrupting event or outage, not afterwards.”
