Telefónica Deutschland Calls On Nominum to Meet High Customer Demand for VoIP Services

Nov 20 2007

Redwood City, Calif., – November 20, 2007 — Nominum, the leading provider of network naming and addressing solutions, announced today that Telefónica Deutschland has selected Nominum’s Foundation Caching Name Server (CNS) to deliver consistent and high quality VoIP services for customers and sustain growth in the German communications market.

Telefónica Deutschland operates a high-performance network in Germany and is one of the largest VoIP carriers in the country. Its customers businesses depend on the performance and availability of the Telefonica network to survive. For Telefónica Deutschland to continue its successful growth in the German communications market, it needs to provide superior service levels and meet Service Level Agreement (SLA) commitments to its wholesale customers while controlling operational costs.

DNS traffic grew considerably when Telefónica Deutschland expanded its services from broadband data to VoIP. The existing DNS infrastructure needed to be adjusted and modernized in order to be prepared for continuous future growth. After conducting extensive testing, Telefonica Deutschland opted for Nominum CNS instead of adding more servers to boost network availability and performance, which would have increased administrative overhead and raised operational costs.

“In less than 30 minutes, Nominum CNS was up and running on the same hardware we use to run our open source servers. In addition, our administrators have more time to focus on supporting new services instead of monitoring and patching servers,” said Robert Sander, head of Systems & Applications, Telefonica Deutschland. “Nominum has helped us build a highly scalable DNS infrastructure that allows us to deliver reliable, high quality service to existing customers with enough capacity to add new customers without impacting performance.”

“Carriers are discovering that VoIP escalates demand on IP networks, reducing service performance and availability. To encourage widespread business and consumer adoption of these services, it’s essential for carriers to deliver reliable and consistent service at all times, “said Tom Tovar, chief executive officer, Nominum. “We are pleased that Nominum helped Telefónica Deutschland meet service-level expectations for its wholesale and direct customers with available headroom to support even larger volumes as new IP-based services are rolled out.”
