Virgin Media to upgrade network infrastructure with Nominum
solutions
Redwood City, CA 12 June 2007 – Nominum, the leading provider
of network naming and addressing solutions, today announced that Virgin Media,
the UK's first and only quadplay provider, has selected Nominum’s Foundation
Caching Name Server (CNS) and Authoritative Name Server (ANS) to provide its
customers with reliable, scalable and high-performance bundles of
services.
With 10 million subscribers, including 5.4m mobile customers,
Virgin Media is the UK’s leading entertainment and communications company. It
became the first quadplay media company in Britain by bringing together
television, broadband, mobile and fixed-line telephony services.
“When
Virgin Media launched in February this year, we needed to upgrade our complete
DNS infrastructure to successfully merge the ntl, Telewest, Virgin Mobile and
Virgin.net services”, said Keith Oborn, Network Systems Product Architect,
Virgin Media. “Based on the success of our previous projects with Nominum, we
decided its products offered the best solution to deliver on our quality of
experience goals, while enabling our anticipated growth.”
Providing
quadplay bundles requires a robust and scalable DNS infrastructure to support
network demand. Virgin Media installed Nominum CNS and ANS servers to enable the
company to offer customers value-added and always-on quadplay services
including; TV on demand, broadband, converged voice telephony services and
digital TV.
“Our network services software will deliver a business
critical foundation for Virgin Media’s internet-based services. We are delighted
to be working with the company and we look forward to supporting its innovative
IP-enabled services going forward,” said Tom Tovar, President and Chief
Operating Officer, Nominum. “Having Nominum’s servers in place at the UK’s
leading entertainment and communications company further validates our
technology leadership and expertise in DNS and DHCP solutions.”
Nominum’s
CNS server is the world's fastest caching name server. It was built from the
ground up to deliver superior performance, reliability and highly available DNS
caching services. Using CNS, communication service providers can reduce costs
and provide better network responsiveness and enhanced network security, while
meeting the challenges of growing IP networks.
Nominum’s ANS server has
higher performance in query responses per second than any other name server
product and can be configured and managed remotely without downtime. This
dedicated authoritative name server is used by customers running DNS registries
and hosting domains, where DNS scalability, availability, manageability, and
performance are most critical.
Virgin Media joins Nominum’s growing
customer list of the largest telcos and cable operators in the world including
BT, T-Com, Telefónica, NTT/Verio, Telekom Malaysia, Bell Canada and
Colt.
