Deutsche Telekom to upgrade broadband infrastructure with Nominum solutions

Redwood City, CA, February 27, 2006 – Nominum, the leading provider of network naming and addressing solutions, today announced that T-Com, Deutsche Telekom’s broadband/fixed network unit,, has selected Nominum’s Foundation Caching Name Server (CNS) to provide its broadband subscribers with a faster and more reliable, ‘always-on’ internet access.

With about 41.7 million narrowband connections and 7.7 million broadband connections, T-Com is one of the biggest fixed network suppliers in Europe. T-Com looks after residential and small business customers in Germany and is represented in Hungary, Macedonia and Montenegro (through Magyar Telekom), Croatia (through T-Hrvatski Telekom) and Slovakia (through Slovak Telecom).

Nominum’s software will be deployed over T-Com’s broadband network, which has 13 points of presence across Germany. With convergence bringing together applications in telecommunications, information technology, consumer electronics and domestic engineering, T-Com identified the need to upgrade its existing Domain Name System (DNS) capabilities to meet with the growing customer demands for IP based services.

After exploring a range of hardware and software options, Nominum’s CNS was selected as a fundamental part in the re-engineering of T-Com’s broadband platform. T-Com will deploy Nominum CNS servers, replacing its existing open-source BIND servers. Nominum CNS servers are many magnitudes faster than BIND servers and use a completely new code base that has none of the inherent limitations and vulnerabilities of BIND.

“After rigorous testing, our CNS software has been selected by one of Europe’s leading operators, further validating Nominum’s technology leadership and value proposition,” said Tom Tovar, vice president of sales and business development, Nominum, “With Nominum servers in place, T-Com will have a highly robust and scalable DNS platform, allowing the company to execute with confidence its aggressive broadband ambitions.”

CNS is the world's fastest caching name server. It was built from the ground up to deliver superior performance, reliability and highly available DNS caching services. Using CNS, communication service providers are reducing costs, providing better network responsiveness and enhanced network security while meeting the challenges of growing IP networks.

Deutsche Telekom joins Nominum’s growing customer list of the largest telcos and cable operators in the world including BT, Telefónica, NTT/Verio, Telekom Malaysia, Telewest, NTL, and Colt.

About T-Com
T-Com - Strong partner in the future-oriented broadband market.

One of the most important trends in the telecommunications market is broadband communication in high-performance networks. In the next few years, it will bring together applications in telecommunications, information technology, consumer electronics and domestic engineering. This convergence will make new electronic services possible, and thus open up new business fields for innovative service providers. In Germany, T-Com is the decisive motor of broadband development, and in Europe it is one of the driving forces behind the expansion of this technology. By consistently basing its actions on the broadband strategy, T-Com is laying the basis for long-term growth.

In 2005, T-Com was able to drive the broadband business further forward. The number of DSL connections in Germany alone, compared with year end 2004, grew by about 2,100,000 to 7.9 million (including resale of DSL upstream products of T-Com by third parties). Success until now is also the result of marketing activities by T-Com and T-Online.

With about 41.2 million narrowband connections and 8.5 million broadband connections, T-Com is one of the biggest fixed network suppliers in Europe. T-Com looks after residential and small business customers in Germany, and is represented in Hungary, Macedonia and Montenegro (through Magyar Telekom), Croatia (through T-Hrvatski Telekom) and Slovakia (through Slovak Telecom).

In Germany, T-Com operates one of the most modern, powerful infrastructures for fast, secure information exchange - including about 197,000 kilometers of glass fiber and an IP network based on the futuristic MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) technology, in which a data volume of about 53,000 terabytes per month and growing is transmitted. To be prepared for the future requirements of broadband applications, T-Com has made a start with the evolution process from today's network to the Next Generation Network (NGN), the communication infrastructure "of tomorrow". On the way to NGN, T-Com is following a so-called overlay strategy. The network of the future is built over today's network. In this way, T-Com is preparing itself ahead of time for the telecommunication requirements of tomorrow.
