Nominum Sets Record for ENUM Performance With Industry-Leading Benchmark Results

Mar 9 2005

Authoritative Name Server Scales to Over 200 Million records, Reducing Costs by more than 75% for VoIP Service providers

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. March 9, 2005 -- Today Nominum, the leading provider of carrier-grade IP name and address management software, announced industry leading ENUM benchmarks, providing telephony service providers with a cost effective solution for VoIP call routing. Running on commodity hardware*, Nominum’s Foundation Authoritative Name Server (ANS) answered to 45,000 queries per second against 200M NAPTR records with an average latency of 2 milliseconds. Nominum’s ANS outperformed by as much as four times all other tested software. The company is also hosting a demonstration of its ENUM solution and benchmarks during the VON Conference in San Jose, Calif.

According to a report from the consultancy Ovum, The Impact of VoIP on Telco Revenue, by 2008 20% of traditional telephony traffic will be VoIP. Twenty-four countries have received ENUM delegation of their country codes**, 10 countries have started public ENUM trials***, and service providers are starting private and carrier ENUM trials. VoIP growth and ENUM adoption will have a major impact on DNS scalability and performance, and most existing solutions will fall short and have to be upgraded.

ENUM solves the routing issues at interconnect points between the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN) to VoIP network and VoIP network to VoIP network. ENUM also simplifies the network infrastructure for converged services, including multimedia messaging, video on demand and data transmission.

“As VoIP continues to become a more common offering, the strain on the DNS rises exponentially,” said Chris Risley, chief executive officer of Nominum. “DNS query loss, high latency and short outages, which were not an issue for web browsers or routing mail, become unacceptable in a telephony environment. Additionally, DNS server scalability is critical for a service provider or carrier dealing with hundreds of millions of ENUM phone numbers. Scalability simply translates into lower hardware and operational costs.

The most common form of DNS software in use by service providers is an open source program known as BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain). However, BIND and other DNS server solutions were never designed to support carrier-grade ENUM requirements and all fail at loading large numbers of ENUM DNS resource records. Additionally, they were not created for always-on high-availability. This is unacceptable in a voice network.

From a technical perspective, ENUM maps traditional telephone numbers to Internet-friendly domains that can be stored in DNS servers. As an example, the phone number +44-1698-852881 becomes 1.8.8.2.5.8.8.9.6.1.4.4.e164.arpa.

Also today, Nominum announced the availability of open source extensions to the “queryperf” program, a DNS server performance measurement tool capable of simulating DNS clients’ requests. The extensions increase the performance of queryperf to allow service providers to compare the performance of Nominum’s products over the open source-based alternatives. “queryperf” is distributed by ISC as part of the BIND 9 distribution.

Detailed information about the benchmarks as well as the updated version of queryperf are available on the Nominum web site or by contacting Nominum at info@nominum.com.

* DNS servers were running on the following configuration: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0, Intel Pentium XEON 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 160GB Raid 5 Disk array, Gigabit Ethernet Interface.
