Leading Japanese ISP, ASAHI Net, Selects Nominum for DNS Acceleration

Aug 9 2004

With over 300,000 subscribers, ASAHI Net replaces Open Source BIND with the Nominum Foundation TM Caching Name Server

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. August 9th, 2004 – Nominum, a pioneering provider of IP address management, DNS and DHCP software, today announced that, ASAHI Net, Inc., one of the oldest and most established Internet Service Providers (ISP) in Japan, has selected the Nominum Foundation™ Caching Name Server to replace its Open Source BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) servers in order to improve operational flexibility and performance.

As an established ISP in Japan, ASAHI Net continues to expand with more than 900 access points in 20 countries. ASAHI Net has been recognized for its commitment to its customers, topping Nikkei NetNavi and Nikkei Click magazines’ customer satisfaction surveys for four consecutive years. This commitment to customer satisfaction, together with its growing subscriber base and on-going rollout of new services, were key factors that caused ASAHI Net to select the Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server.

“Providing subscribers with a high performance and secure Internet service is of the utmost importance to ASAHI Net,” said Mr. Atsushi Kamano, Manager , ASAHI Net. “By implementing Nominum’s servers, we have increased the speed and security of our network, a benefit that is passed on directly to our customers in the form of a more robust service.”

“Nominum’s solution has improved our network’s performance, and as it is a highly-scalable solution, we have greater network flexibility, which allows us to introduce new services and expand our customer base with confidence. We have also reduced our operational costs, as the superior speed and capacity of the Caching Name Server means we require fewer servers to run our network,” he continued.

SSE, Nominum’s distribution partner serving Japan, and sub distributor, ITFOR, teamed up to deliver a solution to address ASAHI Net’s need for high performance and operational flexibilities of DNS caching.

ISPs, like ASAHI Net, need a reliable and scalable caching solution to handle billions of web page requests each day. Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server delivers superior throughput, handling several times the query traffic of a BIND server on the same hardware.

“While increasing performance was an important factor in ASAHI Net’s selection process, they also valued other features of Nominum’s software, including the ability to reconfigure the network without rebooting, reliable memory management, selective-flush and automated systems management,” said Mr. Masahiko Enomoto, Sales Manager of ITFOR.

The Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server is a dedicated-to-caching domain name server and Internet performance accelerator. It delivers unmatched throughput, clocked at 60,000 name resolutions per second on commodity hardware, and it also improves latency through the use of advanced adaptive algorithms. The server configuration can be modified without re-starting, which eliminates a significant cause of planned downtime. Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server provides an extra layer of security for Internet users by supporting the DNSSEC protocol, which ensures the authenticity of DNS communications.
