Dot.Com celebrates its 21st Birthday
Jun 21 2004
Its creator, Dr Paul Mockapetris, is available for interview.
London, UK, June 21, 2004 – Nominum, a pioneering provider of DNS, DHCP and IP address management software, celebrates the 21st birthday of the domain name system (DNS), more commonly known as “.com,” “.co.uk,” “.org,” and other popular suffixes. Nominum’s chairman and chief scientist, Dr Paul Mockapetris, invented DNS - the database that Internet users depend on every day for sending emails, locating web resources, and connecting VoIP calls.
Mockapetris, along with the late Jon Postel, collaborated on the DNS system as part of the pre-Internet ARPANET project. Before DNS, the addresses of all computers on the Internet were maintained in a central catalogue, a process which proved too cumbersome and required users to manually look up the IP address of the intended recipient.
“The idea was to devise a way for Internet users to communicate freely with each other through an easy to operate system. Having to remember a long numerical code was not feasible as more users joined the Internet community,” said Dr Paul Mockapetris. “One of our goals was to develop a system that would allow global networking and information exchange. One of the ultimate successes of the domain name is that it is a universal every day language for Internet users across all continents.”
“This year alone more than a billion users will interact with DNS to do everything from send emails, to browse web pages, or track inventory through RFID,” commented Dr Mockapetris. “In the next five years, I expect to see a dramatic increase in the number of ways in which the DNS is used, reaching far beyond what we have seen in the past twenty-one.”
DNS was tested for the first time on June 23, 1983 at the University of Southern California. The UK led the adoption of the DNS system in Europe, with the first outpost of DNS run from servers at the University College London (UCL).
Paul Mockapetris is currently the chief scientist and chairman of Nominum, a pioneering provider of DNS, DHCP and IP address management.
