BT selects Nominum to secure and enhance performance of its network.

Jun 23 2004

Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server provides increased security and reliability of BT’s IT networks.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 23, 2004 - Nominum, a pioneering provider of IP address management, DNS and DHCP software, today announced that BT, one of Europe's leading providers of telecommunications services, has successfully implemented Nominum FoundationTM Caching Name Server, to consolidate, enhance and secure network performance.

BT has more than 20 million residential and business customers in the UK. Its principal activities include local, national and international telecommunications services, higher-value broadband and internet products and services, and IT solutions. With BT Openworld delivering broadband and narrowband services to more than 1.7 million business and consumer customers in the UK, having a robust and resilient IT network is mission-critical. After evaluating the Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server, BT recognised that it could improve network efficiency and achieve ROI by adopting Nominum’s software.

“While evaluating the Foundation Caching Name Server, we noticed a dramatic increase in network performance, as well as security benefits, both of which provided the impetus for us selecting Nominum’s software,” said Jim Cavanagh, IP Applications Programme Manager, BT Wholesale. “The Foundation Caching Name Server proved to be five times faster than our existing BIND servers; allowing us to reduce future expenditure on hardware, as we continue to expand our network.”

“The reduced latency allows us to provide greater speed and reliability to our existing customers. And the increased scalability allows us to grow our network, both in terms of new customers and, as well as, rolling-out our next generation services, in particular our broadband offering, without jeopardising the operational performance of our network,” he continued.

With increasing threats to networks from erroneous DNS traffic, whether malicious denial-of-service attacks, viruses or malformed DNS packets, the Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server provides companies with a new level of network security, as the product has the capacity to detect and filter illicit DNS packets, which goals cannot be achieved through a firewall or BIND server.

“With the ongoing incidence of viruses and worms, we have noticed that Foundation Caching Name Server provides us with a significant improvement in our networks ability to filter and cope with these threats. The Foundation Caching Name Server, has made our network more resilient”, he continued.

“As more and more services rely on the Internet, the ability to provide fast, scalable and secure solutions will be a key differentiator for BT,” said Richard Kirk, VP EMEA for Nominum. “Ensuring the success of our customers continues to be a key, business goal for Nominum, and we will continue to support BT with our high quality, customer supported products to allow BT to continue to enhance its reliable and robust network.”

Note to the editor:
- Nominum was founded in 1999 to develop BIND 9 and a new version of open source DHCP, under contract to the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), and to provide commercial-grade support for these open source implementations.
- Nominum’s chief scientist, Paul Mockapetris, invented the Domain Name System in 1983. He designed the architecture that is still in use today, wrote the specifications, and coded the first implementation.
- Nominum has an unmatched technical heritage. The people who pioneered DNS and DHCP have joined together to take IP address infrastructure software to a new level.
