Nominum Introduces DCS - Enterprise-class DHCP

Oct 7 2002

REDWOOD CITY, CA., October 7, 2002 - Nominum, a pioneer of Internet naming and address management solutions, today announced Nominum Dynamic Configuration Server (DCS), a next-generation Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server designed to address the needs of today's network-dependent businesses.

DHCP is a network protocol that enables individual users to plug their computers into the corporate network without IT assistance. As enterprise networks have grown in size and complexity, the demands on DHCP servers have increased dramatically. "Enterprises should view their DNS and DHCP infrastructures as critical aspects of their overall infrastructure." said Gartner Vice Presidents Mark Fabbi and John Enck, in a report titled "Sorting Through the Enterprise DNS Confusion" dated March 2002.

"ETH needs a DHCP solution that can be integrated into our existing database and management systems, and can scale up as we roll DHCP service out over our entire campus. After months of testing, we remain very impressed by the simple, yet flexible and powerful design of Nominum DCS. We plan on full deployment during 2003," stated Karl Auer, a Networking Manager at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule, Zurich).

Nominum DCS is the first DHCP solution specifically engineered for large-scale mission-critical environments. DCS supports many-to-one failover for assured DHCP availability, and is the first DHCP server to follow the emerging IETF standards for failover compatibility. DCS starts up in a few seconds, unlike other DHCP servers that can take up to an hour to re-start after a power outage. With reconfiguration on the fly, DCS eliminates the need to stop a DHCP server to change its configuration. DCS can scale to millions of concurrent leases, and delivers industry-leading throughput performance.

"DCS was designed and written from its inception to out-perform all other DHCP servers. Performance in this case means speed, scalability, and availability," said David Conrad, founder and CTO of Nominum. "All in all, DCS meets the needs of both our enterprise customers and our service provider customers."
