Internet Pioneer Paul Mockapetris Joins Nominum Board of Directors
Apr 10 2001
Redwood City, Calif. — April 10, 2001 — Today, Nominum, the world leader in
development and support of Internet naming and address management solutions,
announced the addition of Paul Mockapetris to the company’s board of directors.
Mockapetris invented the original Domain Name System (DNS), wrote its first
implementation, and has participated in its evolution. DNS is at the base of
every e-mail and web access today and may well be involved in every phone call
and mobile data access tomorrow. DNS software lets users locate other computers
on the Internet by typing in a domain name (such as www.nominum.com) instead of
having to use numeric Internet Protocol addresses. Mockapetris will offer
strategic direction and provide insight surrounding Nominum’s current and future
DNS software products and service offerings.
"I’m excited by the
challenge of helping Nominum deliver the 24x7 Internet infrastructure
reliability modern businesses demand. Nominum has the best team around. I’m
confident we’ll succeed," said Paul Mockapetris.
In the early 1980s,
Mockapetris began developing DNS while working in the Information Sciences
Institute at the University of Southern California, where he later became
director. As former Chairman of IETF, Mockapetris maintains his membership and
continues to design the Internet’s fundamental infrastructure.
"Paul’s
incredible knowledge base and business experience will be invaluable as we
develop next generation DNS applications," said Will Thomas, president and CEO
of Nominum. "Paul’s work on DNS has already changed how the world communicates.
Now it’s time to change the way the world does business."
Known as a
pragmatic visionary, Mockapetris has applied his technical expertise to help
several Internet businesses off the ground. He was director of engineering and
the second employee at @Home. In addition, Mockapetris served as CTO at several
start-ups including, Software.com, Fiberlane (which split into Cerent and Siara)
and Urban Media Communications.
Mockapetris holds an undergraduate degree
in physics from MIT and a doctorate in information and computer sciences from UC
Irvine.
