Nominum Closes $5 Million Investment Round
May 11 2000
Redwood City, CA, May 11, 2000 - Nominum Inc, developer of the leading Open Source Domain Name Service (DNS) and DHCP server solutions for the Internet announced the completion of its first round investment totaling $5 million. Nominum develops the Open Source software called Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) freely available from the Internet Software Consortium (ISC). DHCP software assigns an Internet Protocol (IP) address to a system connected to the Internet. BIND is the software that associates a host name with the system's IP network address.
Investors include prominent individuals from Asia, Europe and the US, OmniFirst, Network Solutions Registry and Silicon Valley based Angel Investors.
"Many companies are only now beginning to realize the critical nature of DNS to their commercial presence on the Internet," said Will Thomas, CEO of Nominum Inc. "We wanted to expand our professional support organization to provide the level of service required by leading businesses from around the planet."
Electronic mail, Web browsers, and almost every other Internet application rely on open source DNS. The Internet's 13 root servers all run Open Source BIND software. The generic Top Level Domains (gTLD) server infrastructure consisting of .com, .edu, .gov, .mil, .org, and .net depend on BIND based servers. Internet Service Providers (ISPs), global financial institutions, Universities and leading manufacturers use the Open Source solution developed and supported by Nominum.
The team at Nominum is currently developing BIND version 9, the first to fully support IP version 6 and a secure version of DNS called DNSSEC for the ISC.
