Network Solutions Announces Strategic Investment in Nominum

May 11 2000

Herndon, Virginia, May 11, 2000 - The Network Solutions Registry (NSI Registry), a business of Network Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: NSOL) and the world's leading provider of Internet locator services with more than 14 million names registered, today announced a strategic investment with Nominum Inc. Nominum is the leading developer of open source Domain Name Service (DNS) solutions that use Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND), the underlying software that makes the Internet work.

The NSI Registry made an equity investment in Nominum to help fund their continued development of standards based open source DNS. Open source refers to software that is generally available to the public. "It is important, as the New Economy grows increasingly dependent on the Internet, to provide an ever expanding array of products and services that continually enhance the Internet's software," says Bruce Chovnick, senior vice president and general manager of the NSI Registry. "As good Internet citizens, we take our responsibility seriously to contribute toward making the Internet as robust, reliable and scalable as possible."

The team at Nominum develops open source DNS BIND and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) software for the Internet Software Consortium (ISC). ISC is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and maintaining production quality Open Source reference implementations of core Internet protocols and making them available to the Internet community. "Nominum has worked very closely with the ISC and the Internet Engineering Task Force (the major standards setting body for Internet technology) to help move the Internet forward and we continue to do so," says Will Thomas, president and CEO of Nominum. "The funding we received from the NSI Registry strengthens our efforts."

Nominum is currently spearheading the next generation Domain Name Service software as the primary architects and developers behind BIND version 9.0 and DHCP, among other key Internet technologies. Nominum provides support services to some of the world's largest and most prestigious companies. "We have some of the best DNS and BIND experts on the planet," says Thomas. "It is gratifying to be in a position where you know so many people benefit from what you do."
