IPRD and the VoIP Migration at the Core of Telephony Networks
With the emergence of VoIP and the shift to using IP at the core of telephony networks, wholesale carriers are facing the pressing and essential challenge of migrating existing business models to a telephony environment dominated by IP networks – without sacrificing call quality or profitability.

Nominum Adds SIP to Boost ENUM Uptake
Nominum, which develops network services (DNS and DHCP) software for the carrier and high-end enterprise markets, will today unveil a new release of its ENUM technology, with features designed to speed the take-up of this technology.

Nominum Offers "Always-On" DNS
"APNIC was using an open source solution that up to now worked fine," says Gouyet. "I'm not saying that the open source doesn't work. The open source works fine and a lot of people use it, but it was never designed for a large carrier or enterprise environment."

Ca.Gov Shutdown Avoidable, Says DNS Inventor
Dr. Paul Mockapetris had some comments to make after the federal General Services Administration caused California IT pros grief with a shutdown of their domain record.

One less reason to adopt IPv6?
“Network managers like the fact that they can assign IP addresses with DHCP, but it’s more important that they can see what’s on their network. It gives them information about how many devices are on the network and how much usage of the network there is,” Lemon says. “It’s almost like they have a finger on the pulse of their network if they use DHCP.”

Online congestion warning as Myspace grabs your space
The “MySpace effect” is being talked up by providers of network-optimising software, such as Nominum and Akamai. But it appears to be real, with nothing to check it except the despair of slow-loading pages. Companies planning to add online networking to their intranets or external sites, in pursuit of better employee and customer relations, may need to raise their capacity before they launch their social revolution.

How MySpace is hurting your network
Virgin Media is addressing this phenomenon by upgrading its DNS infrastructure to the latest version of Nominum's software, which uses a technique called Anycast to provide load balancing for improved redundancy. Virgin Media will complete the upgrade this summer.

Virgin Revamps DNS Stragegy
"We decided to revamp the DNS architecture for the relaunch as Virgin Media as, while Nominum's technology does exactly what it says on the tin, we had vulnerabilities in both legacy systems, which we're addressing by deploying a distributed architecture" and an inter-server communication technique called BGP anycast, says Oborn.

Nominum Promises Not To Destroy Internet With New Service
These are the people who wrote DNS BIND. They helped build the ISOC, ARIN, and the other institutions that keep the internet running. So what they do with nonexistent URLs will not, they promise, do harm.

Web-redirection software debut reignites controversy
Nominum is taking a different approach to Web redirection with its new Vantio NXR software. Nominum's software allows its carrier customers to provide Web redirection services to their customers when they type in a nonexistent Web site. Nominum provides the underlying technology for Web redirection, but not the Web-redirection service.

Dropped Connections vs. Dropped Calls?
Wireless operators face a dilemma of their own making as they add new, data-rich services to their service offerings. Over the years, they have worked hard to deliver superior service levels for mobile phone service. Having built their reputations - and advertising campaigns - on this quality of service, they now have to provide the same reliability for wireless data services. This proves to be an entirely different proposition.

Nominum DNS Software Delivers Web Error Redirection
Nominum released a new DNS service delivery module that enables broadband service providers to deliver intelligent, customizable and responsible Web error redirection.

Interview: Paul Mockapetris on DNS developments
The creator of the Domain Name System says DNS services have a pivotal role in the Web 2.0 revolution.

Experts: DNS Attacks Could Go Deeper
Paul Mockapetris, creator of the DNS protocol and chairman and chief scientist of Nominum, estimates that there are thousands of organizations out there that haven't configured their Microsoft DNS service properly and are therefore vulnerable to attack. Contrary to popular belief that Microsoft DNS systems are not commonplace enough to cause major concern over these recent attacks, Nominum -- which specializes in DNS clusters for large service providers -- has seen an increase in enterprises using Microsoft's DNS and DHCP servers coming for help with security, he says.

Firms neglect DNS kit at their peril
A few months ago I had a chat with Nominum marketing chief Albert Gouyet, during which he produced a surprising statistic – eight percent of all Domain Name System (DNS) lookups come from the MySpace web site.

DNS vulnerability puts e-mail, directory services at risk
A DNS server compromised by a hacker could be used to funnel Web surfers to all sorts of phishing attacks and malicious Web sites and even cause havoc with directory services and e-mail in some cases, according to the father of technology, Paul Mockapetris.

My Space, Our Lag?
Thanks to the growth of sites like MySpace, the number of DNS lookups required is growing about six times faster than the number of Internet subscribers, says Nominum Chief Operating Officer Tom Tovar.

Network World Service Provider News Report Newsletter: It’s time for a DNS check-up, experts warn; Have you checked your DNS servers lately?
"Think about the forgotten layers of your network," recommends Gouyet. "Don’t wait for an attack. What we’ve seen from DNS traffic trends, it’s not a question of if you’ll need to upgrade your DNS, it’s a question of when."

The Long View of ENUM
ENUM (from TElephone NUmber Mapping, but also called “Electronic NUMbering”) is a prime example of a technology that has both immediate applications and long-term potential in carrier networks. Many carriers today are making ENUM decisions based on immediate needs for VoIP peering — interconnecting VoIP calls between networks over IP networks.

Elephants in wireless rooms #1
Web 2.0 social networking sites such as MySpace and YouTube are amazingly popular and the kids want to view content when they’re out and about and to add content using their shiny new camera phones. But there is an elephant in the room. The content on a typical page will reference around 240 unique sites — the stat comes from Nominum — and every reference requires a DNS query and response: a fact that MNOs haven’t factored in.

The VoIP Peering Puzzle—Part 14: Nominum Navitas
Nominum claims some very impressive performance statistics for Navitas, including: a query response time under one millisecond, throughput of tens of thousands of queries per second, and updates greater than 10,000 records per minute.

Internet services experts predict their top trends for 2007: Watch out for apps-aware hybrid and managed services
“We see carriers more focused on making sure that applications work, rather than providing raw bandwidth,” Mockapetris says. He predicts quality will improve for both broadband and wireless services, and he says customers will pay more for higher quality DSL, cable and WiMAX services.

Don't Dis the Customer
Nominum earlier this week unveiled a Web error redirect solution, which it says service providers can use to help folks that mistype URLs with alternatives so the users “avoid the frustration” of getting an error page. Offering this kind of redirect can be monetized by the service provider, it added.

Nominum Finds Gold in Web Error Redirection
We realized that there is an opportunity here for broadband service providers who actually provide the DNS service, the traditional name-to-IP address mapping service. We figured out that they could capture that error and convert it into a better user experience by providing a branded page with the search results and suggestions that take the user to where they want to go on the Internet more quickly than does a simple browser error page.

Social Networking and Web 2.0 Create DNS Performance Issues for Carriers
A revolution is taking place on the Internet, with new sites redefining how we interact online. The next-generation Internet is emerging in collaborative and interactive applications and sites with rich, varied media (images, video, music). This major shift in Internet applications has its unintended victims. One of them turns out to be the Domain Name System (DNS).
